Zhiqiang Zhang has been appointed as the new Managing Director of ABB China, succeeding Chunyuan Gu.

Zhang, a Chinese citizen, developed his management experience and understanding of the Chinese market at several large global companies over the past three decades. He left Sandvik, where he was Asia-Pacific Regional Holding Officer and President of Sandvik, to lead ABB’s China arm.

His predecessor Dr. Gu will stay on as Chairman of ABB China and President of the AMEA region, as well as remaining on the ABB Executive Committee.

Commenting on Zhang’s appointment, Dr. Gu said: “Zhiqiang Zhang is a tremendous leader with extraordinary experience and expertise in building and driving major businesses across Asia, and I welcome him to ABB. I look forward to working closely with Zhang and our great team in continuing to grow ABB’s operations, expanding our pioneering technologies and strengthening our leadership in industrial digitalization across China and the region.”

Zhang intends to build on Dr. Gu’s successful track record at ABB China, where he helped increase its market position, and increased its local R&D and manufacturing footprint. ABB currently employs more than 18,000 people in China and over 90% of its solutions sold in the country are locally produced.
