ABB has announced the release of RESIBLOC® Rail, a breakthrough oil-free traction transformer for use in rail transport.

Such transformers feed power to essential train functions like traction, lighting, heating and ventilation, brakes, signalling, and communication. ABB have used epoxy insulation and glass fibre to give the new transformer added mechanical strength-

The new oil-free dry-type traction transformer is the first of its kind and is designed to help improve efficiency and safety in rail transport. According to the Swedish-Swiss company, the oil-free transformer reaches a record efficiency rate of 97 percent. Compared to some traditional transformers this can provide a reduction in overall operational energy costs of up to 10 percent.

“We are proud to introduce this innovative dry-type traction transformer which provides unprecedented safety and efficiency and helps reduce environmental impact,” said Claudio Facchin, president of ABB’s Power Grids division. “This is yet another example of ABB’s commitment to providing sustainable mobility solutions and helping to run the world without consuming the earth.”
