Heerema Marine Contractors has been awarded a contract by Petrofac for the transport and installation of TenneT’s Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) Alpha substation.

TenneT awarded Petrofac in July 2017 the contract for the construction of the 700 MW substation. It is one of the 8 standardised large connections by TenneT. The jacket (2,800 metric tonnes) for the high-voltage substation will be installed in Q2 of 2020 while the topside (3,800 metric tonnes) is planned for Q4 of the same year.

Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha will go into service in 2021. The platform will be connected via two 220 kV export cables, with each a capacity of 350 MW and a length of around 48 km, to a land station at the Maasvlakte.

The company will use its latest vessel, Sleipnir.

Sleipnir is a Semi-Submersible Crane Vessel and has the ability to also operate in shallow waters. During the tender preparations, Heerema used its Simulation Center to explore the feasibility of the jacket and topside installation by Sleipnir in this shallow water location close to shore.
