An investigation has been opened into a power blackout that took place in and around the north-eastern border city of Narva in Estonia.

Transformers in an Elering network substation near the border city of Narva shut off as a result of a fire on Saturday, leaving a significant portion of the population of Ida-Viru County without power. Due to the event, the operation of an energy block of Eesti Energia’s Eesti Power Plant and Enefit280 oil plant were shut off.

Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports that the country’s Competition Authority opened supervision proceedings into the national transmission system operator Elering AS to clarify the reasons behind the Saturday, May 18, incident in Narva, as well as the towns of Narva-Jõesuu and Sillamäe.

“As this was a serious blackout, it is the authority’s job to draw conclusions based on what happened, and issue recommendations regarding how to avoid similar incidents in the future,” ERR cited Estonian Competition Authority Director General Märt Ots as commenting.
