President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order back in May in order to sieze a Chinese-made transformer.

The Trump administration use an Executive Order (EO) ,“Securing the United States Bulk Power System”, in order to seize a 250-ton, $3 million Chinese high-voltage transformer that was on its way to Colorado. It was subsequently taken to Sandia National Labs in New Mexico. The reasons for taking the transformer to the Sandia Lab and it’s subsequent fate are still unknown

The directive aims to keep critical equipment supplied by foreign adversaries out of the nation’s power grid due to supposed supply chain security threats.

Shortly after the EO’s release on May 1st came the surprising information that a federally owned utility managed by DOE, the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), intercepted a nearly $3 million Chinese-manufactured transformer initially intended for one of its substations in Colorado.

WAPA instead diverted it to one of DOE’s national laboratories, Sandia National Labs, in New Mexico.

The focus of Sanda Labs is to help maintain the reliability of nuclear weapon systems, conduct research and development in arms control and nonproliferation technologies, as well as to investigate methods for the disposal of the United States’ nuclear weapons program’s hazardous waste.

Other missions include research and development in energy and environmental programs, as well as the surety of critical national infrastructures.
